Reset your nervous system

Cold water does something breathing can't.

Safety note: This technique is safe for most people. Avoid if you have a heart condition or are advised against cold exposure by a doctor.

DBT — TIPP Skill

How this works

TIPP is a DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) skill for intense emotion. The T stands for Temperature. Cold water on your face triggers the diving reflex — your heart rate drops within seconds. It's one of the fastest ways to interrupt a panic response.

What you'll need: cold water from a tap, OR a bowl of cold water, OR an ice pack

Get your cold water ready.

This is about to work.

30
seconds to get ready

Go.

30

Hold your face in the water (or hold ice pack to your face/wrists). Keep breathing through your nose.

Stay with it.

❄️

Take a slow breath. Notice your heart rate.

The diving reflex just activated. Your parasympathetic nervous system responded to the cold — that drop in heart rate was real.

How do you feel now compared to before?

Why this works

The mammalian diving reflex is an involuntary response to cold water on the face. The vagus nerve is stimulated, causing an immediate drop in heart rate (up to 10–25% in some people). It's used in DBT as a rapid intervention for panic, dissociation, and urges during emotional crisis. It works in seconds, not minutes.
